Mentor Graphics Delivers Complete Software Development Solution for Altera's ARM-based Excalibur Devices

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 12, 2002--Mentor Graphics Corporation (Nasdaq:MENT - news) today announced that Altera Corporation (Nasdaq:ALTR - news) will provide its system-on-a-programmable-chip (SOPC) designers with a complete embedded software development solution, including the Mentor Graphics® XRAY® Debugger and GNUPro compiler suite.

The solution will be included in the Excalibur(TM) Development Kit, which consists of an Excalibur EPXA10 development board, development software, product documentation and reference designs.

The emergence of embedded processors in programmable logic devices (PLDs) forces a radical shift in design methodologies for users working with these architectures. These new devices require software development and debugging environments tailored to the unique capabilities of the PLD and its embedded processor. The licensing of best-in-class software development tools technology allows for the rapid deployment of specifically optimized tools for these hardware platforms. The Embedded Technology Adoption Program (ETAP) from Mentor Graphics has given Altera access to the state-of-the-art XRAY Debugger technology to connect directly to the ARM®-based Excalibur devices.

"Our customers now demand the best software development tools to extract maximum performance from our devices and to meet time-to-market goals," said Joe Hanson, director of Altera's Excalibur marketing and applications. "Mentor Graphics is the only company to deliver tool support for both the hardware and software design flows, helping us to provide our customers with a front-to-back solution for SOPC design."

"Altera recognized early that software development in the era of system-on-chip design has to be tackled in tandem with hardware development," said Robert Day, director of marketing for the Mentor Graphics Embedded Systems Division. "By taking advantage of our unique Embedded Technology Adoption Program, Altera now provides a proven software development platform to help its customers quickly build and debug the software components of a complex SOPC design."

Altera will ship the XRAY Debugger in its Excalibur Development Kits featuring the EPXA10 development boards. The XRAY Debugger will include a 60-day evaluation license and will be pre-configured to target the EPXA10 device using the Altera® ByteBlasterMV(TM) downloadable cable. XRAY will provide support for both the ARM Development Suite (ADS) and GNU compilers and connects to the Excalibur embedded processor solution through the JTAG interface.

Complete Support for PLD and SOPC Design

In addition to embedded software development solutions, Mentor Graphics provides a broad portfolio of tools for PLD development, including tools for design creation and management, simulation, synthesis and hardware/software co-verification.

About the Embedded Technology Adoption Program (ETAP)

Launched in June 2001, ETAP provides semiconductor and intellectual property (IP) vendors with access to market-leading embedded software technology, including its XRAY Debugger and Microtec® Compilers. Companies can license the technologies and build customized development environments tailored for their applications without incurring the resource expense of tackling the development task with an internal tools team. Along with Altera, ETAP members include ARM Ltd., Philips Semiconductors, OSE Systems, Siroyan Ltd., Tensilica and Virtio.
